If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut.

From Quill to Keyboard – An Old Bard’s Reflections
Hello and welcome to the inaugural post of the “Insight Check” series. For those who have journeyed with me this far in my musings and tales on “The Old Bard”, thank you. For the new faces, I extend a hearty welcome.
The “Insight Check” series is designed as a reflective exploration, a deep dive into my experiences, observations, and lessons learned from the world of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs). Its purpose goes beyond merely recounting the narrative beats of my campaigns or giving you a blow-by-blow recount of my most epic battles. No, the “Insight Check” is a richer brew. It is where I take a step back from the rush and tumble of adventuring life to ponder, to analyze, and to share the deeper insights that this wonderful hobby of ours provides.
From philosophical essays on the art and soul of role-playing, to guides on character development and world-building, ‘Insight Checks’ features resources aimed at enhancing your perception of RPGs. Here, you’ll also find reviews of books that have shaped the genre and novels that have captured the spirit of RPG adventuring.
In these posts I’ll also list some original intentions for the site after I created it and how things have changed slightly and how I have adapted.
In essence, the “Insight Check” series is my attempt to encapsulate the wisdom I’ve gained from my TTRPG journey so far. It’s the place where I invite you to sit by the virtual fireside, to share in my reflections, to learn from my mistakes and successes, and perhaps even find something that sparks a new insight of your own.
In other words, “Do you grok what I’m telling you?”
Although this initial post may seem vast in scope, it’s important to mention that each of these sections merely serves as a foundation for more comprehensive explorations in the future. Each theme—from my experiences with various RPG systems and balancing the many roles of life, to the evolution of my organizational practices—will ultimately become the subject of individual “Insight Check” posts. This series aims to delve deeper, affording us the chance to examine every aspect in further detail. This inaugural post simply sets the stage, giving a preview of the depth and breadth of discussions to come. Therefore, consider this your invitation to accompany me on this journey, as we together unfold the complex and enriching world of tabletop role-playing, one subject at a time.
Moreover, to give you a taste of the insightful discussions to come, this inaugural post also includes a brief summary of each upcoming “Insight Check” post, offering you a glimpse of the title and a concise overview of the topic. This way, you’ll have an idea of the rich and varied themes we’ll be exploring in this series, and hopefully, find subjects that resonate with your own tabletop role-playing experiences and interests.
As I began penning down this inaugural post in the early hours of a Saturday morning, around 3:30 AM, I was brimming with ideas, reflections, and anecdotes to share. You may be wondering why I’m up at such an ungodly hour, but that’s a story for another day. However, as the dawn broke around 6:30 AM, it dawned on me too that the scope of these insights was growing beyond a single post’s capacity. What I initially conceived as one comprehensive post had organically grown, demanding a dedicated series to adequately explore each topic. Consequently, I decided to transform this burgeoning post into a series of subsequent posts.
Many of these blossoming posts will happen rapidly as I’ve already spent a significant amount of time nurturing them while working on this initial write-up. Others, however, will require more time to cultivate and will therefore show up gradually over time. Here is what you can anticipate in this insightful series:

However, the insight extends beyond mere observation, as it contrasts the perceptual emphasis of the “Perception Check” series with the deeper analytical and reflective understanding offered by the “Insight Check” series. Expect a journey of discernment, analysis, and personal anecdotes that seeks to offer both wisdom and entertainment. Stay tuned as we further unravel the interconnectedness of game elements, their impact on the gaming experience, and the lessons learned along the way.
Investigation Checks – Deep Dives into the RPG World
I’ll go into some details about my Investigation Check series which represents my concerted efforts to critically analyze and review specific RPG resources. The primary objective here is to furnish readers with comprehensive assessments, guiding them towards worthwhile investments, and cautioning them against fruitless expenditures. When I embark on an Investigation Check, it isn’t a superficial or one-off usage of a resource that prompts the review. Instead, it’s based on repeated and thoughtful utilization, evaluating its merit over a period of time, and determining whether it brings significant value to the table. However, there might be exceptions to this approach. In cases where a resource has proven to be an outright disappointment after a single use, compelling me to consider it a squandering of resources, I may feel compelled to write a post about it to advise others.
